In the world of luxury convertibles, the Mercedes Benz SL has long been the king of the segment. Thanks to its performance, dependability, and luxury, it stands today as the benchmark to which all other luxury convertibles are measured. Like the SL, the Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport F1 team was the absolute gold standard, winning the Constructor’s Championship 8 years running from 2014-2021. Even in subsequent seasons, their Constructor’s record has not dipped below 3rd overall, making for one of the most dominant runs in the sport’s history. So, to commemorate this racing success, it made perfect sense to produce a special edition of the sports car that is one of Mercedes’s crowning achievements, the SL63 AMG. Known as the R232 chassis, this SL is the fastest and most refined SL yet and the first since the R129 to feature a fabric soft top.
Known as the Mercedes Benz SL63 AMG Motorsport Collectors Edition, this unique SL pays tribute to the AMG Petronas Formula 1 car and features a unique hand-painted livery and numerous special touches. This example is particularly special, remaining in “as delivered” condition and showing just 93 km on the odometer. The paint scheme on this car was designed to replicate that seen on the 2021 W12 F1 car, starting with a solid silver in front, with a gradient to black at the rear, which is punctuated with small Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star logos. This paint is stunning in person and was exceptionally time-consuming to carry out. Of course, as Mercedes is paying tribute to it’s F1 car, the title sponsor Petronas needs to be represented, and this is seen in the form of bright teal accents on the lower rockers, front and rear valance and the outer wheel rims. In all, this makes for quite a striking package and a car that - even if you don’t know what it is - looks extremely special.
The interior is largely unchanged from the standard SL63 and features a set of bucket seats from the AMG GT in front, which are upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara. In the rear, two smaller seats offer some added practicality in the form of extra passenger space or a great place to put luggage or bags. Red stitching is seen throughout the cabin, and 4 red seatbelts add to that wonderful contrast. The front seat area features two sizable screens - one that houses all of the gauges and features numerous different layouts for the information in front of you and a second larger waterfall tablet-style screen in the center console that houses the infotainment and vehicle settings.
Powering the SL63 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces an outstanding 585 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. When paired with a 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic gearbox and mandatory all-wheel drive, the SL63 will run the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.6 seconds and then carry on to a top speed in excess of 195 mph.
